suchasensualdestroyer-deactivat asked: Dartmouth, I meant Dartmouth - y'know, Anthro collections at a small colleges in the Northeast, they're all the same, right? (I kid.) Anyways, they're at the Hood Museum. You can find it on the Hood's website in an exhibit called No Laughing Matter: Visual Humor in Ideas of Race, Nationality, and Ethnicity. Shonaabish, L

Football, Hitchens, Abortchat, Etc
lukesimcoe:
I dunno… I certainly agree that there can be something “offensively boring” about the “strident white dude atheist stance”, but blaming HItchens for the atheist bros is kinda like blaming Pearl Jam for Nickelback (or, depending on your musical taste, blaming Madonna for Katy Perry or Joy Division for Interpol, etc.). Just because we’ve encountered small-minded people who can spew...
In editing my tumblr ethnography I keep coming across funny ideas. Like, uh, I thought that tumblr wasn’t terribly conducive to outright trolling? Have things changed that dramatically since last April or have just encountered whole new realms of this ridiculous place I wasn’t aware of back then?
Football, Hitchens, Abortchat, Etc
lifeaquatic:
I just tried to articulate to my dad on the phone that I think it’s weird how vehemently people hate Tim Tebow for being a conservative Christian dbag, because by blindly writing him off for being an idiot aren’t we doing the same thing that he and his family do when they blindly write off pro-choice secularists as idiots?
I mean obviously it’s not completely the same....

OK then
So the journal I’m publishing my tumblr paper to wants me to chop it literally in half and have that done by the end of Christmas break.
OK then, challenge accepted. (Even if I would have prefered a little bit more notice for that much serious hacking and reframing.)

The late Christopher Hitchens
otto-obrien:
Don’t take this the wrong way, but the glowing tributes to Christopher Hitchens are both tasteless and incorrect. Have some decency. The boring wisdom has it that Hitchens broke the mould intellectually. He did not. For all the unique saleability of the Hitchensian idiolect (or intertext), he was a very conventional thinker, in addition to being a provincial. He also had a...

Shocked to find a rare piece of lucid writing in my Vancouver Sun this morning.
Damn, this is a good one. It really lays things down clearly and concisely.
It's 14 degrees celsius in Toronto right now.
WHAT.
Personal blog entry
aaronleaf:
So I decided to start writing 1000 words a day which isn’t hard when I’m working but sometimes I don’t feel like working. Today is one of those days.
Hence this super rare personal blog entry. #based
I woke up this morning on the left side of the bed. The side with the depression in it from hours propped up against the window of my basement bedroom reading. And by reading I mean...

Former Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation chief William Commanda is awarded the rank of Officer in the Order of Canada by Governor General Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
OTTAWA — A group of Algonquins in West Quebec is preparing to launch what could be the largest land claim in Canada’s history — for a swath of territory covering 650,000 square kilometres across...

selchieproductions:
Looking at etymology is interesting; those who argue against the patriarchal in calling a female a woman, because it includes the word man, clearly doesn’t realise that woman, rather than man is the word who has the upper hand here.
The word woman comes from the word wifman, which literally translate as ‘female someone’, whereas modern day man is a confusion of the word...
Why do young women creak when they speak? →
Every 10-20 years or so it seems there’s some new problem with how young women speak. Or you know, not a “problem” pe se, but “oh girls, so silly. They talk funny. So impressionable.” In the late 90’s it was like, lol omg young women go higher pitched at the end of sentences, so dumb! (I remember seeing a story about this on the news as a 10 or 11 yr old, and...

It’s bad enough that they’re forcing a 3rd party advisor on Attawapiskat, but the fact that they are expected to pay, from their clearly deeply inadequate budget, for a service they never even wanted,...
