stupid ass winter, a person can’t just take a jaunt across the street in their jammies and slippers like it ain’t no thing.
Have y’all ever had someone move into your house at a time of year when there aren’t many people looking and you just needed someone and they seemed nice enough… to discover that actually, they are pretty nice but it doesn’t make up for how kind of annoying they are. Just a personality difference or something, but even their way of being friendly is vaguely annoying because...
stupid ass immigration policy
A friend of mine has been dating a really great Mexican guy who’s been living in Canada on a work visa for the past 3 years. His deal is so legit its crazy, like, his employer sponsors him and the government did a labour market assessment and approved him as the appropriate choice for the job he does. But I guess he overstayed his visa and when he went back just now to apply again so he...

My firefox window has crashed 3 times in less than that many minutes since I started listening to this… wtf??
Otherwise, super interesting. I wish I could listen without problems…
I probably have bronchitis

Feeling like a giant sack of dicks.
Must leave house. Must write exam.

Ohio Mom Kelley Williams-Bolar Jailed for Sending... →
lukesimcoe:
Sure, but what happens when everyone wants to do that. I’m not suggesting that the response here is not ridiculous, but the real issue isn’t that a woman was put through the ringer because she wanted to send her kids to a better (funded) school, but rather that the school closest to her was underfunded in the first place.
Stories like this fan the flames of the David (individuals)...

and someone, i’m not sure who, finished off the very last of it this morning before i woke up.
this is unacceptable roommate behaviour. doesn’t everyone know that? NEVER finish the very last portion of something you’ve been sponging off your roommate, especially coffee. that’s just a kick in the balls.
Ohio Mom Kelley Williams-Bolar Jailed for Sending... →
barthel:
Williams-Bolar decided four years ago to send her daughters to a highly ranked school in neighboring Copley-Fairlawn School District.
But it wasn’t her Akron district of residence, so her children were ineligible to attend school there, even though her father lived within the district’s boundaries.
The school district accused Williams-Bolar of lying about her address, falsifying...

“There is nothing inside us,” Parkin mordantly declared. “There are no ghosts in these machines. Man is matter, and matter rots.” Yet Parkin’s own statement establishes that there are ghosts in the machine, that a certain kind of spectrality is intrinsic to the speaking subject. After all, who is it who can talk of having no inside, of man being rotting matter? Not any substantial...
on etiquette
Seriously guys, if you’re going to post a picture of a cat with no skin on it’s face (that is somehow, apparently, alive and in no pain but requires someone to put eyedrops in it’s unlidded eyes because it can’t blink) or like, rotting bodies or something, you could maybe just NOT post that picture and maybe post something blurred out instead and a description of the story...

This is a case study of “Free” at the New Museum that I wrote for a Museums & Galleries course in the fall. The show is up until the 23rd and since the paper isn’t likely to be published or presented anywhere in this form (though I’m submitting a condensed and altered version to a conference in a couple months), I thought I’d just throw it up here for any interested parties....

The French Reaction to the Release of Anti-Oedipus →
agrubstreethack:
This article presents an interesting overview of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The following is an abstract from the article recording some of the reaction Anti-Oedipus received following publication. Particularly interesting is the second paragraph, where Lacan and Badiou both disavow Deleuze and Guattari’s project and Foucault suggests why they got such a mixed...
apparently hotmail's spam filters are racist
I’ve been getting a lot of emails through the moodle for my philosophy class. They are all from my fellow students posting response paragraphs to the week’s readings. But I’ve noticed that hotmail’s spam filters seems to be suspicious of some but not others, even though every email is essentially the same in every detail except for the name of the student. They all have...

“Yes, online petitions and “like” buttons do not work to bring about social change. Everyone has figured that out and I really do not see anyone substantive on the cyber-utopian side arguing that they are that important. I believe this has become is a convenient strawman allowing the literati (like, say, Malcolm Gladwell) to proclaim, “I’m too sophisticated for lolcats.” But I...

Other Emotions Invented by the Internet(?)

… I get the sense that most people who celebrate Lady Gaga for her performance artist schtick aren’t critical of capitalism. Counter-critics assert that Lady Gaga is not glorifying commodity culture but parodying it by offering herself as a “figurative mirroring or projection of consumer culture.” The problem with such an argument is that ironic derision, risk,...
