Day 2 of 9-5
Waking up was much easier this time.

Under a new deal signed by the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto, the act of emailing a link will be classed as equivalent to photocopying, and each student and faculty member will cost the universities $27.50/year for this right that the law gives them for free, along with a collection of other blanket licenses of varying legitimacy. In order to enforce these licenses,...

There is, as has often been noted, something peculiarly evangelistic about what has been termed the new atheist movement. The new atheists have their own special interest groups and ad campaigns. They even have their own holiday (International Blasphemy Day ). It is no exaggeration to describe the movement popularized by the likes of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennet, Sam Harris, and...
Oh great. I just hauled ass to the gym and they are closed.
At least the traffic is pretty clear thanks to Louis Riel Day (AKA “Family Day” in this silly province.) I should be no more than 10 minutes late. No pre-class hot tub for me, I guess.
When you’re already running late, and are just sitting on the bus, AT your transfer point, thinking “this place has some special significance” and then switch back to whatever else you were thinking about not realizing you should be getting off until after the bus starts moving again.
Herp a derp forever.
yay! I just got my first grad school acceptance...
UVic Enviro Studies department wants me, and is offering a great funding package!
Now to wait and see about those other two… and whether I’ll have to make a hard choice, or whether I’ll be heading straight to Victoria.
Hopefully I’ll know soon.
strontiumcapybara replied to your photo: OMG this squirrel is sunning himself on the back…
holy shit, is that bike tiny or is that a MASSIVE squirrel?
IDK if squirrels are smaller in France, but these grey ones we have in Canada are pretty fat. They are like, small cats, pretty much.
That bike is also pretty big. Maybe perspective is skewed?

pretty sure the “Dawkins family estate, consisting of 161 hectares in Oxfordshire …bought in part with wealth amassed through sugar plantations and slave ownership” counts as something to do with him

Can someone please, please help me come up with a lesson plan for tenth graders about the Age of Exploration? It’s not yet at the part about colonization and what exactly the explorers did in the Americas, but more about how exploration grew out of the Renaissance. Please help!
Anyone? I’m at a loss for ideas here. But certainly someone has some thoughts on this.
I suddenly have a strong desire to own a deep...
So I can cook the shit out of huuuuuge amounts of food and freeze individual servings, and always have a million good foods pre-prepared.
"tongue in cheek" is a really wierd idiom.
My upstairs neighbour has been listening to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” over and over again, for days.
um
facebook just suggested my old landlord from my first apartment in montreal as a “friend.” he was nice and all, but…
that creeps me out. are they scanning my email contacts list without my permission? i can think of absolutely no other way they would have associated him with me.

Can I have her job? I would be so good at this!
Loud middle aged middle class white guy talking about “bad neighborhoods” in New Orleans, shut the fuck up please. I’m trying to read over here, without retching.

SHIIIIIT. This is in an hour and a half! Any Toronto friends care to check this out with me?
So I have a job?
I just got a call from the temp agency and I start friday morning. Whoa.
It sounds potentially fairly interesting. It’s doing some kind of research (not clear on exactly what) for a “Global Health” research organization. Could be good. And whether or not I love it, it’ll be nice to make $14/hr full time.
Kinda scared about the full time 9-5 thing, but I think I can get...

Did you see: libcom.org/library… ? I haven’t read it yet, but it’s making the rounds on my FB.
Thanks, I’m reading it now. So far, it’s great! THIS is how you critique a tactic. This is a helpful contribution. I’ll have to think on it awhile…
So I’m trying to write an article… I think… not sure if it’s going anywhere really. But I’d like to write an article addressing the whole question of the Black Bloc, strategy, accountability, and all that jazz that seems to have become such a big deal thanks to Chris Hedges steaming pile of strawman nonsense. There have been some better pieces (Graeber’s...

Wars. So many wars. Wars outside and wars inside. Cultural wars, science wars, and wars against terrorists. Wars against poverty and wars against the poor. Wars against ignorance and wars out of ignorance. My question is simple: Should we be at war, too, we, the scholars, the intellectuals? Is it really our duty to add fresh ruins to fields of ruins? Is it really the task of the...
I’ve been thinking lately about how a lot of people I know are really worried about family members seeing stuff about their lives on facebook… and wondering about why I don’t make more of an effort to keep certain kinds of things about me from certain kinds of people… then it dawned on me. There has been so much gossip and so many scandals in my family that IDGAF. My family...

For Valentines day we’re going to cook up some seared ahi tuna, ika karaage and black gomaae. FUCK YES. dream foods. We’ll probably just go ahead and watch a bunch of Battlestar Galactica too. This is my idea of romance.

You don’t think grammar has a place in second language classes? Or even first ones?
I guess I should rephrase what I was trying to say; as a linguist I find prescriptivist grammar to be in the way for real language. Grammar certainly does have a place both in an L1 and L2 class room, but it is equally important to make our...
Hey guys, me and cureforbedbugs are having a debate about the “chris brown can beat me” tweets, jokes, and whether or not such things reveal something important about feminized sexual fantasies or not. I can’t reblog asks, so just go to his page if you wanna read it.

These girls should probably read this, and see if they still feel the same way. Trigger warning, it’s the police report describing in detail exactly what Chris Brown did to Rihanna. It’s so much worse than I ever imagined. I think people take this shit too lightly. Like, oh, beating someone is just punching them a couple times right? Not quite…

My kids aren’t growing up the way I did, but isn’t that kind of the point? Each generation wants something better for the next. Except many of us value certain things about how we grew up, even if those things are not necessarily what we want for our kids. Going hungry sometimes. Not having many toys. Being spanked with wooden spoons. Hauling coal in to heat the house...

Yeah, I think that was it. After that yucky breakfast experience I’ve gotten really into beans. Beans AND meat together. Or beans AND eggs. Protein makes...
